Glossary of technical web design terms

Very often today, we are literally hit with a myriad of technical terms: sidebar, header, footer; these are just some of the many names that experts in the web agencies use as if they were talking about the obvious, which unfortunately for many are not perceived as such. This is precisely why we decided to create a small glossary of the terms that most often recur among designers:

Glossary of web design in alphabetical order:

Banner:

is one of the most well-known forms of advertising on the Web. They are boxes that can have different formats, usually standard, and that have a certain position within a web page.

CMS:

“content management systems,” literally are content management systems. They are software installed on a server designed to facilitate the management of a website’s content, which can be used without special programming knowledge.

Cookie:

are nothing but the traces and information, which during our Internet connections we leave on the servers or are left by them, as we pass through the network.

Domain:

represents the name we give to our space on the Internet. It normally represents the address we type in to access a site.

Duplicate content:

means content (in the form of text) on a site that is qualified as copied from another web page, by search engines.

E-commerce:

Site devoted entirely to the sale of items or services on the web.

Footer:

would be the classic “footer,” is the part of the page that closes the body. In this section, normally all the main elements of a site are summarized and basic data and information such as: address, contacts, vat number, copyright, etc. are inserted. etc.

Form:

is the interface that offers the possibility for the user, to submit a set of data entered by him. It can be said to be the digital equivalent of a paper form where one enters personal and contact information.

Header:

i.e. header, positioned above the body is the topmost area of a web page. The first one a user sees, it customarily has within it the distinctive features of a site such as logo, menu, etc. etc. Home page: would be the first page of a site, it is responsible for giving an overview of the site to the visitor who lands there.

Hosting:

is the service dedicated to keeping your website present online.

Landing page:

in Italian “landing page,” is normally a page on a site made specifically for advertising campaigns or SEO actions. It almost always has the purpose of generating a conversion whether this is a contact or a purchase.

Newsletter:

is a newsletter written and sent through e-mail to various recipients who, normally have consented or specifically requested that this content be sent.

One page:

more than a term represents a trend in which modern sites are made. This does not literally mean that they are all entirely on one page, but that to move from one section of a site to another, one can safely scroll down.

Permalink:

would be a contraction of the words permanet link, meaning a permanent hyperlink. It simply represents a link to a particular page, section of the site, or post. Obviously they are not present on “one page” sites.

Plugin:

is a component that interacts with another program to augment its functions.

Privacy Policy:

is the document that gives the information to all users, who browse a particular site about the processing of personal data. For example if you collect first name, last name, email, etc. etc.

Redirect:

Is a redirect to another page. The page that has this command, contains within it a code that allows you to redirect to the desired page.

Responsive:

when this term is brought up, it refers to a particular technique, applied when building Web sites, that allows the various pages of a site to automatically readjust to the layout of the device from which they are opened.

Scripting:

Description of actions required through precise programming languages, the script precisely defines the control of operations required by the computer.

SEO:

Search Engine Optimization. This is a set of activities aimed at improving the quality of the pages of a website in order to facilitate its positioning on search engines.

Sidebar:

is a vertical column that is located at the side of a page, left or right is irrelevant. Usually within it are various types of content, such as: news, links, banners, etc. etc.

Slideshow:

is an image slideshow, normally used on the home page.

Template:

“template,” in the world of site development constitutes a basic structure that will be responsible for defining the different content that makes up the site. The various templates define the style of the site.

UX Design:

“User Experience Design,” is a technique designed to make a website intuitive and easily usable.

URL:

stands for “Uniform Resource Locator.” That is, the address of a particular document or web page. Usability: refers to the ease of interaction between a user and a website.

Widget:

are graphical components proper to the user interface, which are intended to facilitate interaction with the site itself.
